Carrera is currently one of the world's best and most popular eyewear brands. Carrera was inspired by Wilhelm Anger, an Austrian sports eyewear company; Wilhelm worked very hard in the 1960s to improve the material and stability of the products. Later, the company collaborated with Ferdinand Alexander, a vehicle designer, to create a limited-edition collection of sunglasses known as CARRERA Porsche Design. Wilhelm developed and patented Optyl®, a new type of resin that was hypoallergenic, extremely durable, and 20% lighter than all other plastics used in the sunglasses industry. This resin had permanent elasticity and dimensional stability, which meant it would "memorise" the wearer's face. The Optyl material is still used in 90% of high-end sunglasses today, demonstrating the material's impact on the industry.

In the 1990s, the Safilo Group purchased CARRERA and relocated the company's headquarters to Padova, Italy. Carrera's popularity among athletes and celebrities has grown since this move.
